At Cowaramup Auto Tech, we regularly see vehicles come in with warning lights or performance issues that turn out to have unexpected causes. This recent case is a perfect example of why thorough diagnostics and experienced technicians are essential when something doesn’t feel quite right behind the wheel. The Problem A customer presented their Toyota Hilux to our workshop in Cowaramup with two clear concerns: the engine was running rough, and the engine warning light had illuminated on the dashboard. The vehicle was still drivable, but noticeably lacking smoothness and performance, particularly under acceleration. Given that modern vehicles rely heavily on electronic systems and precise fuel delivery, symptoms like these often point to ignition faults, fuel system issues, or sensor failures. As a fully equipped workshop offering diagnostics and repairs across all makes and models, our team began a systematic inspection. The Initial Diagnosis Using advanced diagnostic equipment, our technicians scanned the vehicle’s onboard computer and identified fault codes relating to injector performance. This suggested an issue with fuel delivery, but the root cause wasn’t immediately obvious. Rather than stopping at the scan results, we carried out a physical inspection of the engine bay — a critical step that often reveals issues electronic diagnostics alone cannot detect. The Discovery Upon opening the bonnet, the cause quickly became clear. A rodent had made itself at home on top of the engine, building a nest in the warm, sheltered environment. Unfortunately, in the process, it had chewed through several of the injector wiring looms. Damaged wiring to the injectors meant that fuel delivery was inconsistent across cylinders, which directly caused the rough running and triggered the engine warning light. The Repair Process Once the issue was identified, our team at Cowaramup Auto Tech carried out a careful and methodical repair process: The rodent nest and debris were safely removed from the engine bay All affected injector wiring was inspected and repaired or replaced as required Wiring connections were restored to manufacturer standards The system was retested to confirm proper injector operation Fault codes were cleared and a full road test was completed Thanks to the training and up-to-date repair methods followed by our technicians, the vehicle was restored to smooth, reliable operation. The Outcome After repairs, the engine ran cleanly and consistently, with no warning lights returning. The customer immediately noticed the improvement in performance and drivability. This case highlights how something as unexpected as rodent damage can lead to significant engine issues — and why a thorough inspection is so important when diagnosing faults. Preventative Advice Rodent-related damage is more common than many drivers realise, particularly in regional areas or where vehicles are parked outdoors for extended periods. While it’s not always preventable, there are a few simple precautions that can help reduce the risk: Regular servicing to ensure engine bays are checked and cleaned Avoid leaving vehicles parked for long periods without use Be alert to unusual smells or debris under the bonnet Address warning lights early before small issues escalate Why Choose Cowaramup Auto Tech As a Repco Authorised Service centre, Cowaramup Auto Tech is equipped to handle everything from routine servicing to complex diagnostics and repairs. Our technicians are continuously trained in modern vehicle systems, ensuring accurate fault finding and reliable repairs every time. Whether it’s a straightforward issue or something completely unexpected, our team is committed to getting you back on the road with confidence. Routine servicing also contributes to: Improved fuel efficiency Better engine performance More reliable starting Longer engine life Increased vehicle safety Reduced wear on major components By investing in regular maintenance, many customers find they enjoy lower running costs and fewer unexpected repairs throughout the life of their vehicle. Quality Mechanical Repairs Mechanical faults rarely occur at a convenient time. Strange noises, warning lights, steering concerns, braking issues or poor engine performance can quickly become stressful if left unresolved. Our experienced technicians take the time to properly diagnose faults before recommending repairs. Rather than simply replacing parts unnecessarily, we aim to identify the underlying cause of the problem, helping deliver effective repairs and long-term reliability. Cowaramup car service

A four-wheel drive can be built to handle considerably more demanding conditions than an ordinary passenger vehicle, but that does not mean it is maintenance-free. Whether your 4WD spends its time travelling around town, towing, carrying heavy loads or heading onto rough tracks, the way it is used can place additional demands on important mechanical components. Regular servicing helps identify developing wear and gives you an opportunity to address issues before they become larger and potentially more expensive problems. Why 4WDs Can Need Extra Attention Off-road driving can expose a vehicle to conditions that are very different from normal road use. Dust, water, sand, mud, vibration and uneven terrain can all place additional stress on mechanical components Towing can also increase the workload for a 4WD. Extra weight can place greater demands on areas such as the brakes, suspension and drivetrain, making regular checks particularly worthwhile for vehicles that regularly tow caravans, trailers or other loads. Even a 4WD that is primarily used as a daily driver benefits from appropriate ongoing maintenance. You do not necessarily need to be a serious off-road enthusiast for your vehicle to experience additional mechanical demands. What Should 4WD Owners Keep an Eye On? The condition of the vehicle's major mechanical systems is important to its overall reliability. Brakes and suspension deserve attention because they contribute directly to vehicle control, handling and stopping performance. The drivetrain is another important area, particularly where a vehicle is regularly exposed to heavy loads, towing or off-road driving. Keeping an eye on driveline condition can help identify wear and potential problems before they interrupt a trip. Fluids are also an important part of vehicle maintenance. Following the appropriate servicing requirements and checking fluid condition can help protect the mechanical components that keep your 4WD operating properly. These checks are not simply about preparing for a big off-road trip. They are part of maintaining the vehicle throughout its working life. Regular Maintenance Can Help Prevent Unwanted Surprises A 4WD is often purchased because owners want the flexibility to go further, tow more or tackle conditions that ordinary vehicles cannot comfortably handle. The last thing you want is for a preventable mechanical problem to limit that freedom. Routine servicing provides an opportunity for a qualified technician to assess the vehicle and identify areas showing signs of wear. Addressing smaller issues early may help reduce the likelihood of more serious mechanical problems later. The right servicing approach should also reflect how your particular 4WD is used. A vehicle that regularly travels on sealed roads will have different demands from one that spends significant time towing or travelling off-road. Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Cowaramup Auto Tech in Cowaramup, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Cowaramup Auto Tech, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Cowaramup Auto Tech for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.
